For deliveries that require age verification, your driver may use Sherpa’s Scan ID feature to read your date of birth from your ID. This helps your driver confirm your age and complete the required checks before handing over your order.
What happens at drop-off?
Your driver will ask to see a valid ID and check that it is current, appears genuine and belongs to you.
If using Scan ID, your driver will scan your ID through the Sherpa app. The app reads your date of birth and displays your age so the driver can continue with verification.
Scanning does not replace the driver’s checks of the ID itself.
For information about acceptable identification, see What are the valid forms of ID in Australia?.
Do I have to have my ID scanned?
No. If you would prefer not to have your ID scanned, tell your driver. They can check your ID and enter your date of birth manually instead.
You must still show valid ID and meet the verification requirements for your delivery. If scanning is unavailable or doesn't work, your driver can also enter it manually.
Is a photograph of my ID saved?
No. Images of your ID processed through Scan ID are not retained.
Drivers must not take a separate photograph of your ID, including as part of the proof of delivery.
What information is collected and retained?
Scan ID processes your ID to read your date of birth for age verification. Personal information detected during scanning is not retained, except where required for South Australian record-keeping obligations.
South Australia
For alcohol deliveries subject to South Australian record-keeping requirements, we retain order information, including the recipient’s date of birth, for one year after delivery.
Other states and territories
We do not retain personal information detected during scanning after age verification.
These retention arrangements apply to Scan ID information. Other order and account information is managed in accordance with Sherpa’s Privacy Policy.
How is retained information deleted?
After the one-year retention period, Sherpa deletes the retained information from the relevant tables in its delivery database through a scheduled automated process.
This deletion process is checked during our quarterly cyber audits.
What if I cannot complete the ID check?
Your driver must complete all required checks before handing over your order. For age-restricted deliveries, the delivery cannot be completed if your age cannot be verified or you are under 18.
Choosing manual entry instead of scanning does not remove the requirement to show valid ID.
